Born in Zürich, Switzerland.
1981-85
Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium Rämibühl in Zürich. Matura.
1988
Practical at Credit Suisse in Zürich (7 weeks).
1988-90
Several practicals at the IBM Zürich Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon (20 weeks total).
1985-90
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ).
Diploma in experimental physics from the faculty of Mathematics and Physics (IXB).
Diploma thesis: "Optical Force Sensing in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy", done
at IBM Rüschlikon in the group of Urs Dürig, with H. R. Ott as diploma professor.
1991-95
IBM Rüschlikon. PhD thesis: "Mechanics and Electronics on the Atomic Scale:
A Study using Scanning Probe Methods" in the group of Urs Dürig, with Louis Schlapbach
from University of Fribourg, Switzerland, as PhD professor.
1995-97
Postdoc at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, in the group of Peter Grütter,
with a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (first year).
